SUMMARY:Exploring the Modern Druid Tradition: Sacred Creativity\, Awen\, and Nature Connection
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dana Driscoll\, Indiana University of Pennsylvania USA; Grand Archdruid of the Ancient Order of Druids in America/ This presentation will offer an exploration of creative practices and the “Awen”; in the modern druid tradition\, a tradition of nature spirituality inspired by the Ancient Druids and revitalized in the 17th century.  Dana will briefly share details about the druid tradition as a whole: rituals\, beliefs\, the ways in which druids understand consciousness and metaphysics. Then\, Dana will offer an exploration into how druids understand the sacred concept of “Awen”\, which is defined as flowing inspiration\, flow states\, and divine creative expression as well as the broader force of\ndivine creation. While this concept has been studied primarily in  the field of psychology as a “Flow state”\, Dana will share how druids understand the Awen to be many things: an altered state of consciousness\, a spark of insight\, a spiritual practice\, and something that needs to be carefully cultivated. As both an insider and a social scientist\, Dana has a unique perspective on the druid tradition. She will share from her own experiences as well from her studies in the druid tradition (including a large study of 266 druids) and more broadly on her ongoing research on flow states (of non-druids).

SUMMARY:Adding Enhanced Participation to Decipher Huichol Ritual and Shamanic Initiation by Jay Courtney Fikes\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Fikes has provided the following summary of his presentation:\nReading Carlos Castaneda’s first four books played a significant part in my decision to begin fieldwork in 1976 among the Huichol (Wixarika) living near the ceremonial center of Santa Catarina. See map on my website\, http://jayfikes.com/spanish-sobre-el-autor. Dr. Castaneda’s alleged apprenticeship (as described in his first two books) featured three entheogenic plants. One of them\, peyote\, was collected annually by Huichol temple officers; who walked eleven days to enter Wirikuta\, the sacred land where the Sun Father was born\, in order to hunt peyote as (if it were) a deer. To understand the meaning and functions of rituals embedded in the Huichol annual ritual cycle I took Castaneda’s advice. Thus eating peyote during their rituals and while visiting sacred sites\, became vital to my research. This strategy of “enhanced participation\,” led me to complete a pilgrimage in 1986 to a female Kieri\, a powerful entheogenic plant in the Solandra genus. Although Kieri has long been defamed as evil by anthropologists who relied solely on hearsay\, Note 1\, by doing an all night pilgrimage–making offerings and prayers to a divine Kieri – combined with translating the narrative explaining Kieri’s role in creating the first Deer Shaman (Fikes 2021) I learned that Huichol veneration of Kieri preceded collecting peyote–by temple officers making annual peyote pilgrimages which enabled the inhabitants of Santa Catarina to ingest it during their Peyote Dance at the end of each dry season. \nAfter doing 34 years of research with four Huichol shamans\, in 2011 Unknown Huichol: Shamans and Immortals\, Allies against Chaos\, was published. In 2021 I published Beyond Peyote: Kieri and the Huichol Deer Shaman\, which is the focus for our Friday seminar.

SUMMARY:Psychedelic Renaissance? What’s the Buzz? with Lisa Gezon
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Lisa Gezon (University of Alabama\, Birmingham) on a conversation about shifting conversations about psychedelics and their uses in contemporary contexts for self-actualization\, mental health therapy\, and other forms of ritual and healing. How do experiences vary based on demographics and geography? Are experiences of traditionally marginalized populations different in any noteworthy ways? What do anthropologists have to contribute to that interdisciplinary conversation? Gezon will begin with an overview of her current research on psychedelic integration groups. This topic is a preview of conversations we hope to continue at the AAA in November.

SUMMARY:Collaging Consciousness: Art as a Method to Encounter Heterogeneity and Ecological Consciousness with Melinda Kiefer
DESCRIPTION:Collaging Consciousness: Art as a Method to Encounter Heterogeneity and Ecological Consciousness\,” with Melinda Kiefer \nTalk description: Artist/Educator Melinda Kiefer discusses her studio practice which incorporates painting\, sculpture\, and collage of natural and recycled materials to challenge dominant cultural systems and offer radical possibilities of alternate consciousnesses such as ecological consciousness through art. By working with a variety of materials\, Kiefer explores how experience is rooted in materiality rather than ideologically separated\, an illusion which has been intensified by daily mediated experience. Kiefer also touches upon her practice as an arts educator to disband colonial systems of knowledge dominating the body and the imagination. \nRegistration is required. \nRegistration closes on the Thursday before the event at 5:00 Pacific Time. \nPlease register for these events at aocgeneral@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Singing\, Dreaming and Resistance Among the Water Guardians of Cajamarca\, Peru with Chris Santiago\, Board Member
DESCRIPTION:Singing\, Dreaming and Resistance Among the Water Guardians of Cajamarca\, Peru\,” with Chris Santiago\, Board Member. \nRegistration is required. \nRegistration closes on the Thursday before the event at 5:00 Pacific Time.   \nPlease register for these events at aocgeneral@gmail.com \nThis video presentation is based on Santiago’s fieldwork with the peasants of Cajamarca (2012-2014) and their struggle against the Conga gold mining mega-project. The presentation focuses on dreaming and singing as native arts of resistance that proved crucial in the fight for water and life\, specifically the dreams and songs of Señora Máxima Acuña Atalaya de Chaupe and Señora Santos\, and reflects on the power of cultural resistance. \nChristopher Santiago (PhD\, Columbia University\, 2017); \nPositions Held: Substitute Lecturer (2019-2020) College of Staten Island (CUNY); Adjunct Professor (2018-2019 & 2020-2021) College of Staten Island; Adjunct Professor (2018) New York City College of Technology (CUNY); Adjunct Professor (2016) York College (CUNY); Interests and/or Activities: phantasm\, social & environmental justice\, participated in Q&A for the film “Máxima” with director Claudia Sparrow at NYU (2020); Significant Publications: “Hystorize from the Self: D.H. Lawrence and ‘The Lovely Lady’”\, The Psychoanalytic Review\, 2019. “Twilight States: Comparing Case Studies of Hysteria and Spirit Possession”\, HAU: Journal of Ethnographic Theory\, 2021. “Blood Magic In The Age of Psychopathy\, Mass Shootings and Ecological Catastrophe”\, C. Santiago and M. Melmed\, The American Journal of Psychoanalysis\, 2022. \nBased on years of fieldwork in Cajamarca\, Peru\, my research focuses on the theory and practice of cultural resistance in the form of dreams\, songs\, stories\, and jokes which I call the shamanic aspects of the struggle against industrial extraction. The campesinos of Cajamarca say the lagoons and mountains lead the fight. Facing the death of the Earth\, the resurgence of Pacha Mama consciousness in South America is a contemporary manifestation of Andean messianism. In our age of global meltdown\, what is the ‘dreamweapon’ that would allow the voices of nature to speak once again? What is the potential of cultural forms widely considered false\, fictitious\, and counter to truth? Critiquing Western rationality\, I call for the reenchantment of inner and outer nature. I seek to reverse the historical trauma that dissociates us from our imaginations and our bodies through the realization that\, as the premodern West knew\, there is no thought without a phantasm. Abolishing the reactive idealism which separates phantasy and reality\, I revalue experience as mythological revolt\, in an eruption of spirits. How was magic separated from history? How has the imagination been dominated and domesticated? How does this give rise to different temporalities of hysteria?

SUMMARY:The Mythology and Depth Psychology of Octavia Butler – Dr. Ayana Jamieson
DESCRIPTION:The tone of collective discourse has rapidly degenerated\, damaging the forms and rituals that give coherence to our lives\, cultures and professional disciplines contributing to a sense of communal and global unrest. In this intimate Saturday morning seminar\, our desire is to nourish a spirit of reflection rather than repeating the sounds of panic and alarm or pretend hopes. Stepping back from the present situation\, we will reflect on the current moment through trans-disciplinary lenses including philosophy\, theology\, history\, psychoanalysis\, neuroscience\, and anthropology. Together we will seek new perspectives that may help us move into an open future. \nWhile award-winning speculative and science fiction author\, Octavia E. Butler\, passed away nearly fifteen years ago\, 2020 has been a big year in her career. Her novel Parable of the Sower\, written in 1993\, just hit the New York Times Best Seller’s list for the first time in September 2020\, while Ava Duverney\, Viola Davis\, and others continue to work to bring her works to the small screen\, adapting her novels Dawn\, Wild Seed and Kindred for television. Over the last several decades\, Butler’s prescience in Parable of the Sower has not gone unnoticed. Set in the 2020s in Los Angeles\, this novel references a nation beset by climate change\, widespread illness\, economic collapse\, scarcity of necessities\, and yes\, a zealot politician running on the platform to “Make America Great Again.” \nIn this session with Depth Psychologist and founder of the Octavia E. Butler Legacy Network\, Ayana Jamieson\, we’ll explore the mythology and meaning of Octavia E. Butler’s empathetic and remarkable science fiction. In addition to her role as founder of the Legacy Network\, Ayana is also an expert on Butler’s life and work\, the Butler archives at the Butler’s life and work serve as a case study for moving toward psychological wholeness\, surviving trauma and developing resilient narratives in unprecedented times. \nSaturday\, October 2\, 2021\, from 10:00 AM to 12:15 PM Pacific time– via Zoom
